Botswana Football Association (BFA) launches the women's national first division that shall commence on the 6th of December for the 2025/26 season. The league will be divided into two streams, the north and south division.

In an interview with Touchline Publishing, BFA's Head of Women's Football, Tsholofelo Sethoko shared that they had already communicated with all regional football associations to inform the participating clubs and to submit eligible teams, which are regional champions and runners-up.

"The BFA competitions department and Women's Football Committee are closely coordinating with the regions to ensure that all logistics, player registrations, and venues are properly managed. This preparation phase is key to ensuring that the league launches smoothly and successfully," said Sethoko.
She hinted that the teams would be drawn from all BFA affiliated regional women's leagues.

The teams will be divided into two streams, ten from Southern Division and ten from the Northern division. She also said that as part of the rollout, block promotional play-offs are scheduled for the weekend of 25-26 October 2025 to determine the remaining teams that shall join the league structure. She added that the selection is based on merit, where regional champions and runners-up qualify for the promotional playoff.

"This approach ensures equal representation and opportunities for women's clubs across the country. This marks a big step in creating a competitive and structured pathway for women football in Botswana," said Sethoko.

She, however, acknowledged that the league does not have a title sponsor. She noted that the BFA through Thomas Hall Consultancy is currently engaging with existing and potential partners to support the new league.

"While sponsorship discussions are still ongoing, the Association remains committed to ensuring that the league is financially sustainable and professionally managed through the support from FIFA. We are working towards securing funding to cover logistics, officiating, and team support as part of a broader strategy to elevate women's game nationally," said Sethoko.

She also said the ultimate goal is to create a sustainable pyramid structure that promotes competitive balance, player development, and professional standards toward paving the way for Botswana to become a leading nation in women's football within the region.

The launch of women's football league comes at a crucial time when the senior national team recently competed in WAFCON finals and failed to qualify for the upcoming edition. The league could help with growth in women football, player development, and competitive structure for upcoming competitions for both local clubs on international scale and the national teams.
